Green Man, Red Man: A Guide to German Traffic Lights

When I first arrived in Berlin I saw a gift shop in the airport selling all sorts of collectable items with either a green man or red man on them. I assumed that this must be some kind of German cartoon character or something along the lines of Sponge Bob or Micky Mouse. However, the first time I crossed a pedestrian intersection the light bulb went off.

Green Man Go!

This funny little guy with a cute hat is the shape of the ‘walk’ light for the smaller pedestrian traffic lights. It makes me all warm inside to see his happy stride and funny hat as I walk across a street!

Red Man Stop!

His arms are out, extending to the sides in the universal symbol for everyone to stop. The graphics are so much more fun than those in the US, don’t you think?
