No Easter Bunny or Egg Hunts in Guatemala
Forget hiding and finding eggs on easter when in Guatemala. But, as a trade off, you get to smash an egg on top of a friends head wishing them prosperity and good luck. Easter is one of those interesting holidays which has evolved over the last couple thousand years from the celebration of Spring and fertility (think eggs and rabbits) to a hybrid celebration of the “pagan” with the resurrection of Jesus. In Guatemala the eggs are drained of yokes and filled with confetti and flour. Everyone gets a small bag filled with a dozen or so eggs to smash upon the heads of others. What follows is a mad dash to attack others while avoiding getting hit yourself. Its a lot of fun, but stressful for those who want to avoid getting their hair messed up!
