Planting Flower Bulbs Upside Down

I’m great a growing weeds; they thrive under my close care and gardening skills. However, it is the rest of the green stuff that doesn’t seem to do so well. Perhaps it is my lack of watering or not understanding soil types or fertilizer. I seem to do better with cactus than weeds. Maybe that is because I lived in Las Vegas for 17 years. After a bit of encouragement from my best friend, this spring I made my first attempt at planting something in my garden. I bought a bag of 70 flower bulbs from Costco. On the back was an easy picture instruction guide on how to plant them which I thought I followed.

Dig the Hole

In the first picture you dig a hole in the ground. From the little picture it looks like its about four to six inches deep. Simple enough. I got a shovel and dug a trench like hole similar to the one in the picture. As I was doing so, I thought to myself, this is pretty easy. Maybe I’ll do this some more!

Plant the Bulbs

The next picture showed a persons hand placing the bulbs carefully into the trench. I thought to myself that I didn’t care if they were spaced quite that carefully and thought a random pattern might be more natural. So, I cut the top off the bag of bulbs and grabbed a handful and dropped them from waist height into my new trench type hole. A few went off to the side and I coaxed them into the hole with my foot. For the most part there was a few inches in between each. Simple enough!

Pack the Dirt and Water

I pushed the dirt back over the bulbs and stepped on it to pack it down. I actually didn’t water the bulbs because a rain storm was headed our way within hours. I figured I’d let mother nature take care of that part. Easy smeazy!

What I Did Wrong

I was telling a friend about my first planing experience at a coffee shop. Her first question was, “did you plant the bulbs upside down?” I gave her a dumbfounded look. They have a direction? Egads! I guess I should have actually read the text below the little pictures in the directions. Now I have no clue if the flowers will bloom. It is quite possible that I planted them all upside down!
